Thank you for the pictures!
Very envious.
I need to make the move to homestead.
To much talk not enough action.
Could I bother you for your story?
Always encouraging to hear the stories of been there, done that.
Also, I assume the "perched cabin" is for food storage?

well i've lived in the same area for 50 years...i grew up on a homestead nearby and then when i became of age we bought one that was just bare land and built all the buildings, put the road in, etc...

its a lot of work when ya start from scratch !

Do you have a "job"?
Is it true alaska pays you to live in the state? (income tax)
Grow your own food? Livestock?
Sorry for all the questions.
Just lookin to learn.

I'm envious, but really you should build a better stilt house for your mother in law.

yes, i have a job...but i work a lot less than most people...about 5 months out of the year so i got a lot of free time...

we used to grow a lot of our own food as well take game moose, caribou, mountain critters for meat but now that we're older we're not much into that anymore...

other than poaching moose most other forms of food gathering is better done at the grocery store if a persons labor has any value at all...but when we enjoyed growing our own food it was okay...

our homestead is more of a small ranch, we had horses for quite a while for pleasure riding...but those years are over now too...

i've seen mosquitos almost that thick before, but not where i live...it was much further up north...

but yeah, there's usually mosquitos about...where i am the first group out in the spring are the most aggressive. then the second batch in the spring are aggressive, but not as bad as the first...after that its just skeeters doing their thing...

thank you...its like the wild kingdom around here as you can see from the pics...

we've had a bear chase a moose and two calves through the yard before when we were out on the deck having our morning coffee...haha...we yelled at the bear and everybody including moose, bear and people went different directions in a hurry !

Excellent! A little slice of Heaven. We love the wildlife by us too. I'd rather be surrounded by animals than people. Was that a friggin Grizzly or just a brown bear??

I think a black bear could climb that. All I saw when I was in Alaska was brown bears but I heard they had black ones, too.

Beautiful pics. Whereabouts in Alaska are you? Fairbanks?
My dream is to someday homestead in SE AK. Northen half of the panhandle (I heard the further south, the more rain).

I have been to Alaska, it brings back memories. Family went up in 1897, an Uncle who stayed and married a local lady, 11 kids, Google JACK WADE, my dad loved visiting our relatives up there, Charley and Dad were inseperable, boys in the woods.

Long Story, the Alaskan side of the family lives around Circle, Eagle, Fort Yukon.

Gasilat, I envy you, Cajuncoin.

This makes me wonder how many folks on here make Alaska their home. Mid-December marks my first year up here, even if its not in the "real" Alaska. Thinking about moving out of Anchorage, but I don't know what direction I would go in. So much still to explore.

I live in the southcentral region of the state....but at the moment I am much further north, about as far north as ya can get. I wrote a poem for my wife this morning about the weather where I am and text messaged it to her...

The arctic breeze cant be tamed it blows wherever it will
And when winter arrives the winds do thrive bringing a biting chill
But theres beauty up north amidst the cold and ice and snow
A man can see forever towards the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Brooks Range down below
The polar bear and arctic fox bearing coats of pearly white
Become a familiar companion during the long, dark winters night

One mosquito will keep me up all night until I kill it AND confirm the kill. Deet would be my bestest friend in AK.
